CRIME, TIMELINES AND TAXES: BUSINESSES HIGHLIGHT TOP BARRIERS TO SUCCESS AT A LOCAL LEVEL

Edmonton, AB — The Alberta Chambers of Commerce (ACC) has released the latest Alberta Perspectives “Municipal Red Tape and Business Supports” findings, collected between September 12 and October 6, 2024. Insights were gathered from 401 self-identified business leaders across the province, highlighting issues impacting Alberta’s business community, from crime and public safety to cost burdens and regulatory hurdles.

The survey revealed that 70% of businesses have been affected by some type of crime in the past year, with incidents such as theft (30%), vandalism (28%), cybercrime (28%), and community-based issues like loitering and drug-related activities (32%) being most prevalent.

This has led 58% of businesses to invest money to protect their enterprise and employees, with an average expenditure of $4,909. Notably, 21% reported spending $10,000 or more.

“These statistics represent the daily struggles Alberta businesses face to operate safely,” said Shauna Feth, ACC President and CEO. “While necessary given the environment, these are resources that could have been allocated to growth and development. Enhancing public safety and reducing the impact of crime must be a priority for all stakeholders.”

Local permit processes also pose significant barriers, with 48% of respondents reporting timelines were a major challenge when pursuing renovations or expansions. Subjectivity in guidelines (38%) and communication issues (37%) were also highlighted.

Moreover, 48% of businesses expressed dissatisfaction with the level of support and services provided by their municipalities, with 26% stating they were 'not at all' satisfied. This sentiment underscores the survey's finding that businesses feel their growth and competitiveness are increasingly cost constrained by local fees and taxes.

“Streamlining processes and clearer communication would enable businesses to respond more quickly to market opportunities like housing Alberta's growing population,” Feth stated.

“Stifling businesses with cost and regulatory burdens stunts economic opportunity – each community plays a role in the prosperity of our province.”
