Issue:

Prioritizing the development of a multi-use transportation and utility corridor in Northern Alberta.

Background:

The Highway 686 Corridor has been under discussion and analysis for over 25 years, with various planning components at different stages of progress.

Despite the recent announcement of another study, there remains no direct east-west transportation route above the 55th parallel in Alberta, nor a direct highway connection between the Peace River region and the Fort McMurray region.

Our Recommendations

  1. Incorporate Highway 686 Corridor project into Alberta Transportation’s three-year infrastructure plan as a priority project. This initiative is essential to unlocking the economic potential of Northern Alberta, improving emergency response capabilities, and ensuring equitable infrastructure development across the province.
